Dartford v Lewes

The Darts return to Princes Park this weekend when they take on Lewes in the Isthmian Premier.

Dartford have hit the road of late with three consecutive away days. Now Adrian Pennock’s side are hoping to extend their unbeaten run on home soil to six games. Five points from a playoff place, the Darts know a victory will keep the pressure on those above them.

Lewes look set for another campaign in the Isthmian Premier and will want to finish as high up the standings as possible. The Rooks travel to Kent after a much needed win last weekend, their first in nine matches.

Jones at the Double

Following a 1-0 triumph at Cheshunt last midweek, the Darts made the short trip to league leaders Folkestone Invicta on Saturday. Pennock named an unchanged side and in isolation picked up an excellent point. However, results elsewhere mean Dartford have fallen further behind the top five with seven games remaining.

Callum Jones scored his first goal in ten appearances when he profited from Dan Smith’s saved effort. Within eight minutes Invicta were level after on loan debutante Nathan Paul-Lavaly equalised. It didn’t take long for the Darts to regain their advantage and it was Jones with a curling shot that did the trick. Folkestone Invicta are top of the table for a reason and in the second half they had the chance to make it all square from the spot. Former Invicta goalkeeper, Jonny Henly kept out Jake Hutchinson’s penalty, but moments later Henly couldn’t keep Joe Pigott at bay.

Playoff Race

Dartford have now lost just once in their last six and at Princes Park in the league they have only lost twice all season. At home, the Darts have taken 13 points from the last 15 available and with two consecutive fixtures on their own patch, Pennock’s side will be determined to cash in.

Above them in the table occupying the final playoff place is Billericay Town, who have a five point cushion. However, Dartford are also being hunted down by Burgess Hill Town in seventh and Cray Wanderers in eighth.

Position Team Pts GD
4 Chatham Town 66 +36
5 Billericay Town 63 +23
6 DARTFORD 58 +12
7 Burgess Hill Town 58 +1
8 Cray Wanderers 55 +6

Youngsters Make Impact

In the two times Dartford have hosted Lewes they have a perfect home record and have yet to concede a goal at Princes Park. In the previous meeting on home soil the academy graduates took the plaudits in a 2-0 victory. After the Darts created plenty of chances in the first half, Olly Box finally made the breakthrough on the stroke of half time. Then just before an hour had been played George Whitefield doubled the lead. Lewes later had Ethan Kaiser sent off for a second yellow card.

That was the first time Lewes had visited Princes Park since 2011. Back then Danny Harris opened the scoring for Tony Burman’s Dartford side and Charlie Sheringham added two more in a 3-0 triumph.

Points Down the Pan

Earlier this season the Darts were beaten for a second season in a row at the Dripping Pan. Dartford were looking good in the closing stages to take home a point in Sussex, but conceded a 95th minute goal when Bobby Unwin netted the winner. Defeat ended an unbeaten run of four on a day the Darts lacked a cutting edge according to Pennock.

Dartford will be hoping to end their two match losing streak against the Rooks having lost at the Dripping Pan just over a year ago. Michael Olarewaju scored what is still his only goal for the Darts when he equalised from Danny Bassett’s opener. Then late in the game Marcus Sablier grabbed a brace for Lewes as the Darts fell to a 3-1 loss.

Go West

Captained by former Dart, Tyler Christian-Law on the weekend, the Rooks beat Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. Devonte West made the difference with two first half goals for the Sussex side. Hamlet managed to pull one back via an own goal, but Lewes finally broke their winless streak to move into 14th place. Christian-Law started 13 games for the Darts last season and made a total of 42 appearances.

Tough Run

Lewes started out this season with Bradley Pritchard in charge and despite losing on the opening day they went on to win the next four. The Rooks couldn’t keep that kind of form going and after a terrible run of defeats in October the Sussex side made the managerial change. Craig Nelson returned to the dugout as the new boss.

Under Nelson’s guidance results had been mixed until recently. A loss at Billericay Town at the end of January was the start of a run in which the Rooks picked up a single point in eight outings. In that time Lewes have taken on four of the current top five. So the win last weekend was a welcome boost for the Sussex club as they look to push on for the remainder of the season.

Assistant Manager’s View

Roland Edge saw the point at Folkestone Invicta as a good result and was pleased with the forwards, he spoke to Dartford FC TV after the 2-2 draw and said: “It was really pleasing. I thought the boys up front caused them no end of trouble, they struggled to deal with them”.

Dartford’s assistant boss highlighted the difference between the league leaders and this current Dartford side, he explained: “The one thing that their side has more than us is composure because they have got people that have been there, seen it and done it”. He continued: “Ours are quite young, still learning their trade, but I thought they were fantastic and I think they’ve grown as players game by game”.

Edge still believes the Darts can break into the top five, but admits there can’t be many more slip ups, he added: “I think we’ve got a team good enough to get in the playoffs. Is it going to be difficult? Yes. Are we going to need to be impeccable? Pretty much I think. We will keep going to the very end and hopefully we will achieve what we want, but we’ll fight anyway”.

Statistics

  • Last Saturday was the first time in seven matches in which Dartford scored more than one goal in a game, going back to the end of January against Brentwood Town.
  • The Darts have the second best points per game at home in the division (2.17)
  • Dartford have the second best home defence conceding 16 times in 17 matches. Lewes have the second worst away attack scoring 15 in 17 outings and have scored the second fewest (38) home and away.

On This Day

Dartford strolled to a comfortable 4-0 home win on this day against Margate in 2017. Two goals from captain Elliot Bradbrook helped the Darts secure three National South points. The midfielder headed in the first midway through the first half and the lead was doubled after the break through Luke Wanadio. A long range effort from Bradbrook made it three before Alfie Pavey finished off the scoring.

The Darts have only won three matches out of 14 on 21 March post second world war. In 1969 they beat Barry Town 2-1 in the Southern League Division One and in 1992 they defeated Moor Green 3-1 in the Southern Premier.

Lewes v Dartford

Dartford will want to strengthen their playoff credentials when they travel to Lewes this weekend in the Isthmian Premier.

The Darts have yet to record back to back away wins this season and if Adrian Pennock’s side achieve a victory they could climb into third place. Maximum points can also potentially close the gap on the top two, who take each other on this Saturday.

Lewes have taken just one point from their last four outings and will be hoping to move further away from a relegation battle rather than being dragged towards the bottom three.

Smith on Song

Sam Smith scored his first goal for the Darts to become the match winner. The midfielder pounced on a blocked shot to find the bottom corner through a crowd of players. Dartford created plenty of opportunities to race ahead, but were unable to add to their tally. That made for a nervy final fifteen minutes, but the Darts held out to take three valuable points.

Sam Okoye and Jez Pinder returned from suspension and went into the starting lineup. Dan Carter and Jacob Bland were named as substitutes. Joe Tennent was missing from the matchday squad.

Building Momentum

Victory on Saturday extended Dartford’s unbeaten run to four putting the consecutive defeats in early November behind them. On the road the Darts have lost just one of their last seven in the league, but have only won one as well.

With some difficult matches on the horizon against league leaders Folkestone Invicta and playoff hopefuls St Albans City, then Chatham Town, an away victory at Lewes will build confidence and keep the momentum going ahead of the remaining December fixtures.

Defensive Improvement

Twenty games into the league campaign and the Darts are showing they are contenders to make the playoffs. Although Pennock’s side are sitting in third, they could easily get a challenge from teams below them who have games in hand. Yet it’s clear Dartford have improved defensively which has turned those early season home draws into wins.

Over the first ten league matches, the Darts won just twice conceding 19 and had to wait until the ninth game to record a first and only clean sheet in that spell. Over the next ten outings, Dartford have won seven, conceded nine and added a further four clean sheets.

Rooks Take Darts

Michael Olarewaju scored his only goal for the Darts in this fixture last season. The defender won’t be able to repeat that on Saturday as he begins his suspension. Back in March, Olarewaju equalised at the Dripping Pan after Danny Bassett put Lewes in front. The hosts won it in the final ten minutes with two goals from Marcus Sablier.

Dominant Dartford

Defeat in Sussex in March was Dartford’s first ever against Lewes. Previously, the Darts had won three out of four including a 2-0 triumph at Princes Park just over a year ago.

Academy graduates Olly Box and George Whitefield were the difference, but the Darts could have won by more on the day.

Barren Spell

Lewes last tasted victory a month ago when they beat the league leaders at the time, Brentwood Town. The 4-2 home win saw their opponents relinquish top spot.

Consecutive losses followed versus Carshalton Athletic, then Wingate and Finchley. The run was then extended when the Rooks suffered a 2-0 home reverse against Chatham Town, who were down to ten men with the scores level. Former Dart, Tyler Christian-Law featured in that loss. The midfielder played 42 times last season under Adrian Pennock scoring one goal.

Six Goal Thriller

However, last Saturday they halted that run of defeats in an entertaining 3-3 draw at Hashtag United. The Tags were only ahead for six minutes when Bobby Unwin levelled. The midfielder scored his first goal since returning to the club late last month. Martell Taylor-Crossdale had the Rooks in front, but before the half was out Hashtag United equalised. Another Lewes returnee, Alfie Allen put the Sussex side back in the lead five minutes into the second half. However, Evans Kouassi grabbed his second of the afternoon to leave things all square.

Assistant Manager’s View

Roland Edge was delighted with the opening 45 minutes last Saturday and the win, he told Dartford FC TV: “I thought it was well deserved. In patches in the first half it’s the best we’ve played. We put them under a lot of pressure, they defended well, but it was a really, really good first half”.

The loss of Dan Smith through injury was a setback for the Darts, but the depth of the squad played its part, Edge added: “We brought people on and they created other problems for their defence. I think on another day we could have won by two or three more really”.

Hoping to continue momentum, the assistant manager isn’t expecting an easy ride at the Dripping Pan, he commented: “Lewes are very good at home, we know what they do, they play a nice style of football”, he continued: “We are confident at the minute and we have got to maintain that. The hard work is the main thing in every game. Don’t go there thinking it’s going to be gifted to you, it never will”.

On This Day

Dartford have won five of the last six on this day with the last two outings ending 1-0. Hendon were beaten in 2008 thanks to a rare Tommy Osbourne goal. The Darts also had James White sent off. In 1997, Dartford won at Yate Town in the Southern League South. The only side to take something out of the Darts in this current unbeaten sequence was Worcester City in 1986. Stourbridge were beaten 3-1 in 1983. Three years earlier Folkestone were defeated 1-0 and Trowbridge Town lost 3-1 in 1975.

In a Kent Floodlit League fixture Dartford thrashed rivals Maidstone United 6-0 in 1967. Twenty years earlier it was the Darts who were thrashed by Bristol City, losing 9-2 in a F.A Cup first round replay.

Season Preview 2025/2026

Lewes

In the early 2000’s Lewes moved up through the Isthmian Leagues to the National South. By the end of the decade, they reached the National League. That success was the tipping point as the cost was too much. As a result the Rooks were relegated from the National League after one season. Afterwards they became a community club and since 2011 have remained in the Isthmian Leagues.

2024/2025 Season
Isthmian Premier: 13th
F.A Cup: 1st Qualifying Round
F.A Trophy: 2nd Round
County Cup: 3rd Round
Top League Scorer: Danny Bassett (20 goals)

Five consecutive wins from the start of the campaign had Lewes top of the table. Surprise leaders by mid-October, the Sussex side were unable to maintain their early season form. Their first defeat was a 5-0 reverse at Potters Bar Town. Then the Rooks went on to win just three over the next 23 league outings. Although the slide was steadied from February, Lewes finished thirteenth despite such a promising start.

Manager – Bradley Pritchard

A former player at the Dripping Pan, Pritchard played for the club between 2021 and 2024.. As a player he gained football league experience with Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient. After leaving the O’s, aside from his spell with the Rooks he played for Greenwich Borough and Cray Wanderers. Pritchard had player coach roles at Beckenham Town and most recently Phoenix Sports.

Summer Transfers

A trio of former Cray Valley Paper Mills players joined Lewes over the summer. Antigua and Barbuda international, Dan Bowry and Clement Asiedu were two of them. Hassan Ibrahiym moves from Dulwich Hamlet, but had a previous spell with the Millers.

Staying in Sussex, Finlay Chadwick makes the switch from Worthing having recently been on loan at Steyning Town. Perri Iandolo has had his fair share of moves over the last year and he makes another one by joining Lewes. Devonte West makes the step up from Hollands and Blair. Ryan Bernal will be donning the red shirt after joining from Hertford Town.

Relegated with Hastings United last term, Louis Rogers will be in goal for Lewes after making 44 appearances in 2024/2025. In front of Rogers helping the defence will be experienced defender Ian Gayle, who joins from Folkestone invicta. Another moving further south from Kent to Sussex is Jack Burchell, the defender was at Welling United. Jordan Maguire-Drew and Billie Clark don’t need to travel far to get to their new club having arrived from Whitehawk. Kaan Bennett came through Colchester United’s academy and joins have gained experience at Needham Market as well as Maldon and Tiptree. After a successful trial, Arezki Hamouchene is a Rook.

Lewes will start the campaign without last season’s top scorer and captain, Danny Bassett. The striker was given an eight month ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules towards the end of last term.

Departures include Jack Meeres to Whitehawk. Josh Spinks returns to newly promoted Burgess Hill Town for a second spell with the club. Goalkeeper, Toby Bull joins Dulwich Hamlet.

Lewes v Dartford

Dartford are heading to the Dripping Pan to take on Lewes in the Isthmian Premier this weekend.

The Darts travel to Sussex after getting back to winning ways last time out. Now they will be determined to pick up maximum points and put their previous away day defeat behind them. Lewes set the early pace this season but have since dropped to mid-table. The Rooks look set for another campaign in the Isthmian Premier barring an incredible late surge into the playoffs.

Dartford’s main aim is to keep pressure on table toppers Billericay Town. Victory at the Dripping Pan will return Adrian Pennock’s side back to the summit should the leaders fall to defeat at home against Chichester City.

Pennock’s decisions paid off big time last weekend in the dramatic late win at Princes Park. The Dartford boss described the game as “a great advert for the league” when speaking to Dartford FC TV after the victory. Looking to bounce back from the loss at Cheshunt, the Darts hosted third place Horsham with both sides challenging for the league title. The tough fixture was a test for a Dartford side who had seen their tremendous 21 league game unbeaten run ended a week earlier.

In defence, the reliable Luther Williams was named as a substitute and in came George Whitefield against fellow title challengers Horsham. Whilst, Samir Carruthers made way for Louis Dunne in midfield. Former Hornet, Eddie Dsane had to be patient and wait his turn to be introduced later in the match.

Dartford faced adversity in the first half with the visitors the better side. Jake Elliott deservedly put Horsham in front before Jacob Marsden and his crossbar kept the Darts in the game. Dartford’s Callum Jones had his penalty save, but the hosts were off the pace.

In the second half Pennock brought on Carruthers and Jez Pinder to gain some midfield control as well as Eddie Dsane to help push for a leveller. Those changes were significant as explained by Pennock: “Our fitness levels told; we kept knocking on the door and our second half performance was excellent. I think the first half we were just going a little bit too long, we needed to get that extra pass in”. The introduction of Carruthers aided Dartford’s passing game. The twist came three minutes from time. A low cross by Sam Odaudu found Whitefield to tap in at the far post for the equaliser. Two minutes later, Carruthers sent in a free kick and Dsane was there to score the winner. The Darts are now unbeaten at Princes Park since October spanning 11 games.

Despite defeat on the road a fortnight ago, the Darts had been on a brilliant run of eight consecutive away victories in the Isthmian Premier. Pennock and company will be hoping to start another winning streak on Saturday, but to do that Dartford will need all the help they can get, Pennock commented: “Lewes is a very tough place to go to, but we want our supporters to be backing us because they were excellent again (last weekend).”

A home win against Lewes in November turned out to be the fifth match unbeaten in Dartford’s long undefeated spell. A dominant display against the Rooks ended in a 2-0 triumph. After a number of squandered chances by the Darts, Olly Box opened the scoring in the first half. Just before an hour was played Whitefield put daylight between the hosts and the visitors, scrambling in the second. Lewes were later reduced to ten men after Ethan Kaiser received a second yellow card.

Dartford last visited the Dripping Pan over 14 years ago in a match that ended all square. Tony Burman’s side had to leave it late to rescue a point after Paul Olima put Lewes in front. Tom Bonner hit a low drive to level in injury time. The only other visit was back in January 1983 when Dartford won a F.A Trophy first round tie 2-0. The Darts went on to reach the last eight without conceding a goal.

Lewes won their opening six games and seven of their first nine to start the campaign as the pacesetters. Sitting top of the table with 20 points from a possible 24 gave the Rooks optimism. However, since then they tasted victory just three times in the league over the next 23 games, picking up ten draws on the way.

The Rooks finally won back-to-back Isthmian Premier games again to end February and begin March. In their last home fixture Lewes beat Hendon 1-0. Captain, Danny Bassett scored an early goal to earn the hosts maximum points. Last weekend they went to Dulwich Hamlet and claimed a 3-1 win after coming from behind. Hamlet led through Amaru Kaunda, but three second half goals made sure Lewes came away with another three points. Ollie Starkey and a late brace from Bassett sent the Sussex club home happy.

  • The Darts have gained 17 points from losing positions, six of those have come in their last two victories.

On This Day

Dartford have won their last three on this day all in the Kent Senior Cup and in each season went on to lift the county cup. A Jordan Greenidge brace saw off Dover Athletic 2-1 three years ago. Ronnie Vint and George Sykes scored in another 2-1 win, this time against Greenwich Borough in 2016. Whilst in 2011, the Darts swept aside Whitstable Town 6-1 with goals from Danny Harris, Jon Main, two from Adam Burchell, Tom Bonner and Charlie Sheringham. Dartford’s last road trip in the league was in 2009 when Brendon Cass netted in a 1-1 draw with Bury Ton in the Isthmian Division One North title winning campaign. In all competitions, Dartford are unbeaten in their last 12 games on this day winning nine and drawing three. The last defeat was in 1969 and that is only the third loss in 27 games on the 8 March.

Dartford v Lewes

Dartford aim to extend their unbeaten run in the Isthmian Premier to five when they host Lewes this weekend.

The Darts need to start turning draws into victories if they want to climb the table and move closer to the playoff places. Adrian Pennock’s side have drawn three of the last four league games and are currently seven points from the top five. Although results have improved this month, the Darts have won just once in their last nine league fixtures. Lewes were this season’s early pace setters until a run of five without a victory. However they ended that sequence in their last match in the Isthmian Premier by taking maximum points.

Dartford won their previous home game which featured six academy graduates against Cheshunt. Yet is was experienced midfielder Samir Carruthers who opened the scoring from the spot. The Ambers levelled in the second-half, but George Whitefield’s goal of the season contender earned the Darts a 2-1 triumph.

Only three former academy players featured in the 3-3 draw at Hashtag United, but this time two of them scored. Pennock introduced Ade Yusuff for the suspended Duane Ofori-Acheampong in the only change to the starting eleven. Sam Odaudu netted his third of the campaign to give the Darts a first-half lead. Then Pennock’s side had to show character after falling behind twice in a hectic final 25 minutes. The Tags equalised through Toby Aromolaran and went in front after Joshua Rusoke scored. Three minutes later Denzelle Olopade drew Dartford level before the hosts went 3-2 up in the 87th minute when Ayo Olukoga looked to have won it for the Essex side. In the final moments Oliver Box made it all square again and there was still time for last ditch heroics when Jacob Marsden made an incredible save onto the crossbar.

After picking up an injury in the draw at Potters Bar Town, Sam Okoye made a substitute appearance in that draw against the Tags. Pennock is hoping that last weekend’s break in the schedule can aid the recovery to injured players Michael Olarewaju, Eddie Dsane and Samir Carruthers.

Dartford last hosted Lewes in March 2011 and Charlie Sheringham’s brace secured a 3-0 victory. Danny Harris opened the scoring smashing a looping volley inside Connor Gough’s post to put Darts one up. The crucial second goal arrived on 20 minutes when a corner on the right found Sheringham by the far post and he headed in off the bar. In the final minute a swift three-man move started by Ryan Hayes ended with a third goal, Sheringham hooked his shot home from inside the six-yard box.

Five months earlier the Darts drew 1-1 at the Dripping Pan thanks to a late Tom Bonner equaliser. After Paul Olima had put Lewes in front, a quick free kick made its way to Bonner who fired his shot beyond the goalkeeper to salvage a point. The only other previous meeting between the two sides was back in January 1983. Dartford progressed in the F.A Trophy with a 2-0 away win.

The team occupying the final playoff spot in the Isthmian Premier is this weekend’s opponents Lewes. The Sussex side ended last season as one of the form teams and started this term where they left off. The Rooks won their final five fixtures in April. Helped by the 14 league goals from former Dart, Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala, who has now departed, the Sussex club finished eighth. In August they won their first five extending the winning streak to ten. It took until the end of September for Craig Nelson’s side to lose their first Isthmian Premier contest. Prior the heavy loss to Potters Bar Town, the Rooks had opened up a six-point lead to become the early pace setters.

In the Rooks last league game they were trying to put an end to a five-game winless run in the league, which began at Potters Bar Town. Although Lewes picked up draws against Billericay Town, Chatham Town and Hendon they were beaten for just the second time when they visited Horsham in mid-October. So, a Sussex derby under the Dripping Pan lights against bottom side Bognor Regis Town was just the tonic.

Lewes may have scored early against their local rivals, but they left it very late to secure maximum points. The Rooks completed a double over Bognor Regis Town having beaten the basement boys by a single goal in August. New signing, Gianluca Botti scored 31 goals for Chertsey Town in the Isthmian South Central last term. The forward scored a minute into his home debut to open his goalscoring account. The visitors equalised through Jasper Maher leaving the hosts having to dig deep. In the final three minutes the floodgates eventually opened with goals from Matt Warren, and injury time strikes for Botti and Danny Bassett.

Nelson’s side did suffer defeat on the weekend in the F.A Trophy going out to Southern Premier South side AFC Totton. Former Premier League striker Charlie Austin is back in non-league with the Hampshire side and opened the scoring. In the last minute Tony Lee completed the 2-0 win for the visitors.

On This Day

Dartford are looking for a first win on this day since 1991. The Darts last victory on 23 November was a 1-0 triumph against Burton Albion, now of League One. Since then they have lost four and drawn two. The last outing on this day was a F.A Trophy Kent derby at rivals Maidstone United. The third qualifying round finished 2-2. In 1974, the Darts were so close to pulling off a F.A Cup first round shock. Facing high flying Plymouth Argyle, who ended up winning promotion that season to the old Division Two (now Championship), Dartford were 2-1 up with five minutes to play. Argyle finished strongly to come from behind and win 3-2.

Season Preview 2024/2025

Lewes

In the early 2000’s Lewes moved up through the Isthmian Leagues to the National South. By the end of the decade, they reached the National League. That success was the tipping point as the cost was too much, as a result the Rooks were relegated from the National League after one season. Afterwards they became a community club and in 2017 were the first semi-professional club to pay the women’s team the same as the men.

2023/2024 Season
Isthmian Premier: 8th
F.A Cup: 4th Qualifying Round
F.A Trophy: 2nd Round
County Cup: 2nd Round
Top League Scorer: Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala (14 goals)

Lewes finished the season as one of the form teams winning five consecutive games. The Sussex club started the campaign brightly, had an unbeaten run of seven over the festive period, but in between the Rooks weren’t quite consistent enough to earn a place in the playoff places. Aided by the goals of former Dartford winger Kalvin Kalala, Lewes finished eighth and on par compared to the previous two seasons.

Manager – Craig Nelson

Managing in the Southern Counties East last season, Craig Nelson was announced as the new boss of Lewes following Tony Russell’s departure after three seasons. Nelson was at Glebe last term and had the Kent side top of the table when he left with four games to go, the Kent club finished third. In his playing career, he became established at this level playing for Tooting and Mitcham United before progressing into coaching, and then his first managerial role at Glebe.
