Dartford v Bromley

The Darts begin their Kent Senior Cup campaign on Tuesday night hosting National League side Bromley.

Dartford have won two of the last three editions of the county competition. After defending their title successfully they relinquished the crown last season. Now they will start their quest to reclaim the silverware against the side they beat in the final twelve years ago.

This will be the first meeting between the two sides in the competition since the 2011 final. Tony Burman led the Darts to a 4-1 victory with Elliot Bradbrook opening the scoring in the first-half. After the break Ryan Hayes doubled the advantage. Goalkeeper, Craig Holloway fumbled into his own net for the third. Then Hayes set up Danny Harris to put Dartford out of sight. Bromley’s Warren McBean scored a consolation for the visitors.

The following year Dartford won promotion to the National League where they stayed for three years. Bromley remained in the National South until reaching the top flight of non league in 2015. So paths have rarely crossed with only five meetings since.

Dartford have won five of the last six against Bromley, which has included a National South double, an F.A Trophy win and a F.A Cup victory. Bromley’s only win in that time came in the F.A Cup. Yet it was the very same competition in which they last met nine years ago.

Drawn in the first round, the Darts set up a tie with Bradford City after beating Bromley 4-3 at Hayes Lane. Louis Dennis put the hosts ahead inside a minute before Harris levelled. Then Dartford went in front twice through Hayes and Bradbrook. However, the Ravens equalised on each occasion after Moses Ademola and then Danny Waldren scored. A Tom Bradbrook header nine minutes from time made sure the Darts progressed into round two for the first time in 30 years.

Now it is Bromley who are in the National League and Dartford in the division below. The Darts may have come close to joining their opponents but playoff heartbreak has denied them. This season Alan Dowson’s side have yet to get going, however on the weekend they entered the top ten.

Taking on Torquay United, Dowson made five changes to the side that lost to Braintree Town. The Dartford boss gave George Alexander his debut after joining on loan from Bromley. The striker has scored seven times for the Ravens in 44 appearances. In the National South the 22-year-old has found goalscoring a bit easier. In his loan spells at Welling United and Slough Town he has managed 15 goals in 33 league games. Richard Chin made his first start for the Darts since the playoff semi-final defeat to St Albans City. On loan for a second time from Charlton Athletic he has now made nine appearances for Dartford. Tyrell Miller-Rodney was back in action after recovering from a slight injury. Harvey Bradbury started up front and Jordan Wynter in midfield after the pair finished serving their suspensions.

A 12 minute spell at the end of the first half put the Darts in control. Three players opened their goalscoring account for the club. The new loan signings grabbing the headlines. Chin’s return went perfectly well and he put the hosts in front with a curling shot into the top corner. Alexander scored on debut with a delightful turn and shot. Finally, Moussa Diarra volleyed his side further ahead in a 3-0 win. A first ever victory over Torquay United and a first clean sheet for over a month helped Dartford move up to tenth.

Alexander isn’t the only Dartford player who has played for Bromley. The most notable is Luke Coulson, who made 135 appearances for the Ravens. Part of the F.A Trophy winning side, the winger joined the Darts in the summer of 2022. Paul Rooney, who was sent off against Braintree Town had six games on loan at Hayes Lane. Jordan Wynter made 14 appearances and Alex Wall played 19 times for the Ravens.

Bromley are now in their ninth season in the National League. Under Andy Woodman they won the F.A Trophy in 2021 beating Wrexham. In May, they were defeated in the playoff semi-finals. Before Woodman arrived, the Ravens also lost a F.A Trophy final to Brackley Town in 2018 and had previously reached the playoffs as well.

Progress has continued under Woodman during this campaign. Second in the National League they are 11 points behind leaders Chesterfield, who beat them in the playoffs six months ago. The Ravens gave a good account of themselves in front of the television cameras earlier this month losing 2-0 to League One side Blackpool.

On Saturday, they faced a long journey to the North East to take on Hartlepool United. The visitors got off to a great start when Michael Cheek put the visitors ahead after four minutes. He scored again to record his tenth of the season just before half-time. The Pools halved the deficit before Ben Krauhaus and Olufela Olomola secured a 4-1 victory.

After Dartford’s homecoming in 2006, the Darts have added four Kent Senior Cup triumphs taking them to 13 in total. Six times winners Bromley last won the tournament in 2007.

On This Day

Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong’s brace completed a comeback against Hungerford Town on this day three years ago. Ryan Seager put the Crusaders in the lead. Then two goals 13 second-half minutes from Berkeley-Agyepong earned all three points.

Eight years ago plenty of future Dartford connections and former players were on display. Losing 2-1 in the F.A Trophy at home Whitehawk, the Darts were up against Steve King, Craig Braham-Barrett, Paul Lorraine, Jake Robinson, Danny Mills and Dave Martin. On the substitutes bench that day was also David Ijaha.

The only previous Kent Senior Cup tie played by Dartford on the 28 November was a 5-2 win over Sittingbourne in 1978.

Dartford v Torquay United

Dartford will attempt to beat Torquay United for the first time when they meet at Princes Park this weekend.

Saturday will be the fifth time the Darts have taken on the Gulls and they have yet to pick up maximum points. In fact, Jordan Chiedozie’s goal in April 2015 is the only time Dartford have scored against their opponents.

The first meeting between the two sides came in August 2014 at Princes Park. Elliot Bradbrook skimmed the top of the crossbar from a penalty in a 0-0 draw. Eight months later at Plainmoor, James McQuilkin broke the deadlock from 20 yards. With eight minutes to go, Chiedozie equalised from close range.

After both sides were relegated to the National South, in different seasons, their paths crossed again during the 2018/2019 campaign. Torquay United came out on top on both occasions winning 2-0 home and away. At Princes Park, the Gulls went top of the league thanks to two goals in the final quarter of the match. Ruairi Keating crashed a volley into the roof of the net to give the visitors the lead. One became two when Jamie Reid sealed maximum points for the Devonshire club.

By the time the reverse fixture came around, Torquay United were battling for the title with Dowson’s Woking. Gary Johnson’s side were reduced to ten men as early as the 13^th minute when Jean-Yves Koue Niate was sent off. Despite having a man advantage Dartford couldn’t make it count. Instead, Reid scored another two goals against the Darts to complete a double over their opponents.

Dartford hosted Braintree Town on Tuesday night off the back of two straight home defeats. The Darts were beaten by late goals against Chelmsford City in the league over a fortnight ago. Then last week Maidstone United scored with almost the final kick of the game to knock Dartford out of the F.A Trophy. However, splitting up those losses, Dowson’s side went to Worthing and won 4-3.

The Dartford boss made three changes to the team that exited the trophy. Lewis Manor was back up front partnering Alex Wall for the first time. Sam Odaudu made his first start in almost a month and Paul Rooney returned to the lineup. The midfielder could be up against one of his former sides this weekend. Rooney had his first taste of non-league football with Torquay United on loan in December 2016. The 26-year-old made six national League appearances with the Devonshire side scoring once.

Rooney picked up his second red card as a Dartford player. Previously sent off in pre-season, the former Gull was dismissed just before half-time against Braintree Town. The Darts have now had five sending offs since the beginning of their National South campaign. Two second half goals by Aaron Blair condemned Dartford to a third consecutive home loss.

Harvey Bradbury and Jordan Wynter were both suspended mid-week, but will be available this weekend. Brandon Barzey will be back from international duty with Montserrat. Tyrell Miller-Rodney was rested on Tuesday after a slight injury. Tommy Block is still in recovery having missed almost two months of action.

Dartford have scored 30 times in the league this term and hope to add to that tally after consecutive blanks. Loan signing George Alexander will be hoping to get off the mark after joining this week. The striker scored against the Darts last season with Welling United and back in September whilst at Slough Town. The 22-year-old moved to Bromley after a youth career with Millwall. In the National South he has scored 15 in 33 appearances during his loan spells with Welling United and Slough Town. Dowson has also brought back Richard Chin from Charlton Athletic on a loan deal. The defender made eight appearances for the Darts last season during his temporary spell at Princes Park.

Torquay United have been here before in the National South. Last time they managed to bounce back to the National League straight away. One of three former Football League sides in the division, they were among the favourites at the start of the campaign. That tag was justifiable nine games into the season when the Gulls were a point behind the leaders in third. Johnson led his team to six wins from seven at one stage, the only blemish a surprise defeat at Aveley.

Since that run Torquay United have slipped down the standings with losses against Hemel Hempstead Town, Maidstone United, Weston-super-Mare and Hampton and Richmond Borough. A convincing 5-1 home victory over Welling United in the middle of those defeats being the bright spark. In November, the Gulls have defeated Bath City, lost against league leaders Yeovil Town and won at basement boys Havant and Waterlooville. In the F.A Trophy they gained revenge over the Glovers with a 2-1 victory.

On This Day

Lee Noble scored the winner against his former club on this day in 2017. Dartford came from behind to win at Brentwood Town six years ago. The Isthmian Division One North side took the lead and a F.A Trophy upset looked on. Elliot Bradbrook equalised with a looping header with 15 minutes left. Noble sent the Darts into the next round with a long range shot two minutes from time.

At home Dartford are winless in five on this day. Their last victory came in a friendly when they beat Finnish side Grankulla IFC 4-1 in 1977, Geoff Bray scoring a hat-trick. In the seventies it was not unusual for the Darts to take on a foreign side in a friendly. Six years earlier they beat German Division Three side FC Gelsenkirchen 07 by the same score.

One of the few times Dartford have taken on Football League opposition also came on 25 November 1961. The Darts had beaten Exeter City of Division Four in a replay and were handed a tie with Bristol City. Unfortunately, the second round F.A Cup tie finished in an 8-2 defeat to the Division Three club in front of just over 13000 supporters.

Dartford v Braintree Town

Dartford hope to get back to winning ways when they host Braintree Town at Princes Park on Tuesday night.

Alan Dowson’s side have been beaten in their last two home games in all competitions. Victory against the Iron will move the Darts ahead of their opponents in the National South. On the road Braintree Town have recorded just one triumph all season. The Iron have lost their last three on their travels in league and cup. Yet both sides are within a win of the playoff places, Dartford are three points adrift, Braintree Town are just one point away.

A break from National South action on Saturday ended in F.A Trophy defeats for the Darts and the Iron. Dartford fell to a last gasp goal to Kent rivals Maidstone United in the second round. Moussa Diarra came the closest for the Darts in the first half by hitting the woodwork. The hosts had opportunities in the second-half often missing the target. Both goalkeepers were not really troubled until a stoppage time winner from Maidstone United striker Levi Amantchi.

Dowson handed keeper Ryan Sandford his debut against his former club. The impressive Archie Wood kept his place in the side with Paul Rooney making way. Brandon Barzey was on international duty, Harvey Bradbury suspended and will miss the Braintree Town game and Tommy Block injured. Joash Nembhard returned from suspension. Ollie Box was named on the bench after his recall from a loan spell at Margate.

Dartford did manage to claim all three points in their last league game, down at Worthing. Victory mid-week will make it back to back wins in the National South for the first time since the end of September and start of October. A topsy-turvy game in Sussex ended 4-3. A prolific spell at the end of the first-half turned a one goal deficit into a 3-1 lead. The Darts capitalised on poor defending from the hosts as Alex Wall, Luke Coulson and Jordan Wynter found the back of the net. The Rebels fought back to level the game, but Tyrell Miller-Rodney won it for Dowson’s side.

Dartford also scored four last time they played host to Braintree Town. Charlie Sheringham netted from the spot five minutes after the break before Tom Bonner was sent off. Coulson scored a stunning volley and after the Iron pulled a goal back, Samir Carruthers scored a late brace.

The reverse fixture at Cressing Road, where Braintree Town have lost just three times in 33 league games under Angelo Harrop, the Darts picked up a creditable draw. The hosts took the lead in the first-half. Baris Altintop, now with the Darts set up Aaron Blair. Slick football led to the equaliser with Jernade Meade finishing off a neat team goal.

Altintop spent a season with the Iron after he signed for the Essex club from King’s Langley. The defender has since made 18 starts for Dartford this term. Another former Iron in the Darts ranks is Luke Allen. The midfielder spent two campaigns with Braintree Town scoring a playoff goal against Dartford. Allen will make his 105th appearance for the Darts if selected on Tuesday night

If Braintree Town could recreate their home form they would be challenging for the top places in the division. Instead their struggles on the road leave them outside the top seven. Their latest setback was in the F.A Trophy as they were beaten 3-0 by National North side Gloucester City.

The Iron had a slow start to their league campaign winning just once in August. Finishing the opening month two places above the drop zone, they have since climbed the table. A 4-0 win over Worthing provided confidence to begin September. Although the next four were drawn they went on to record back to back victories.

Braintree Town lost their first game in eight when they took on league favourites Yeovil Town. However, the Essex side bounced back at home with two convincing wins. First, Havant and Waterlooville were beaten 4-0, then St Albans City 4-1. Yet another away defeat held the Iron back after losing to Eastbourne Borough just under a fortnight ago.

Prior the F.A Trophy exit on the weekend, Harrop led his team to third consecutive home triumph scoring four times once more. This time it was against Welling United. Shaq Coulthirst, Blair and a Matt Ward brace earned another 4-1 win.

On This Day

Chris Dickson’s five minute brace early in the second half handed Dartford victory on this day. The Darts hosted Slough Town three years ago and won 2-0. Dickson scored a minute after the interval and moments later doubled the lead. The former Charlton Athletic striker played eight times for the Darts scoring three.

Three years earlier, Dartford were involved in a six goal thriller at home against Wealdstone. Alfie Pavey scored a pair of equalisers as the Darts fell behind twice. Andy Pugh put the hosts ahead for the first time, yet the Stones levelled from the spot with three minutes remaining. In stoppage time Lee Noble was sent off with the match tied at 3-3.

Dartford v Maidstone United

Alan Dowson aims to secure a first major cup victory as Dartford boss against Kent rivals Maidstone United this weekend.

The Darts have yet to clear the first hurdle in the F.A Trophy or F.A Cup since Dowson took charge. Although victories have arrived in county competition, Dartford will relish the opportunity to progress in a Kent derby. Maidstone United will be keen to improve on last season’s run to the last eight. The Stones will also hope to repeat their trophy win over the Darts four years ago.

During the Covid hit season, Dartford visited the Gallagher Stadium and fought back twice to force a replay. Former Maidstone United striker Elliott Romain scored both goals after Dan Wishart and Justin Amaluzor put the hosts in front. Back at Princes Park, the Darts were narrowly beaten by an Iffy Allen strike.

In cup competition Dartford have claimed the last two victories. During the same campaign as the F.A Trophy exit, Ky Marsh-Brown scored the winner in the Kent Senior Cup. The Darts went on to lift the county cup for that season almost two years later. In the F.A Cup, Dartford enjoyed a 3-0 away win in October 2021. Noor Husin fired in from long range, Danny Leonard added a second and Ade Azeez put the icing on the cake.

The Stones and former Dart, Jack Barham hit back in the league two months later with a convincing 4-0 win. Barham claimed the match ball with a hat-trick and Michael Phillips added the fourth. Maidstone United’s last visit to Princes Park also ended in triumph, Barham netting the decisive goal.

Dartford have never knocked their rivals out of the F.A Trophy. The previous three attempts ended in defeat. In 1972, the Stones won 1-0 and 15 years later they beat the Darts 5-1. Then there was the replay loss four years ago. This time Dowson’s side have home advantage and with no replay or extra time the result will be settled on the day.

After last weekend’s postponement, Dartford had a week to rest before their trip to Worthing on Tuesday night. Dowson was forced to make two changes with Harvey Bradbury and Joash Nembhard serving a one match ban. The Dartford boss also decided to leave out Lewis Manor. Coming in to the starting eleven were Archie Woods, Luke Allen and Alex Wall. Winger, Brandon Barzey was away on international duty and Tommy Block out injured.

In a topsy-turvy game the Darts came from behind, let a lead slip, but ended up winning 4-3. Worthing went in front when Danny Cashman scored. Then in the space of 15 minutes at the end of the first-half Dartford were 3-1 to the good. Wall capitalised on some poor defending to score his third in four appearances. Captain, Luke Coulson netted from the edge of the box. Jordan Wynter then grabbed a rare goal, his third in his 165th appearance. The hosts fought back with a superb strike from Ricky Aguiar before Ollie Pearce levelled the score. There was one more twist with six minutes to go, Tyrell Miller-Rodney put away the winner.

Wynter could face his former club on the weekend. The versatile defender and midfielder played eight times for the Stones during the 2018/2019. The only other connections between the two sides are both goalkeepers. Mitchell Beeney’s father played in goal for Maidstone United in the late eighties and into the early nineties. New signing Ryan Sandford had a loan spell with the Stones. He could become the fourth keeper used by Dowson this term. The shot stopper arrives after his short term deal ended with AFC Wimbledon.

The Stones are bidding to return to the National League at the first attempt. Relegated last term, the Stones have managed to put unbeaten runs together putting them in playoff contention. A five-game sequence of two wins and three draws followed the opening day triumph over Slough Town and defeat at Bath City. George Elokobi’s side suffered a surprise loss at home to Aveley before picking up another four victories and three draws.

In that time the Stones also progressed to the second round of the F.A Cup. Two months ago, they won 4-1 at Steyning Town of the Southern Combination Premier League. Then three consecutive 2-0 wins have seen the Stones into round two. They faced Southern League Premier South side Winchester City at the end of September, went to Plainmoor and beat Torquay United and a fortnight ago defeated Chesham United. Next up for Maidstone United will be League Two side Barrow.

On Tuesday, Elokobi’s side bounced back from their heavy 5-2 loss against Hampton and Richmond Borough. The Stones won a Kent derby against Dover Athletic. Levi Amantchi netted the decisive goal, his 16th of the season.

Wall could make his 50th Dartford appearance (29 starts, 20 substitute, 21 goals)

On This Day

Lyle Della-Verde scored twice in a 4-1 win over Gloucester City six years ago. The midfielder netted either side of half-time. Warren Mfula opened the scoring and Alfie Pavey added a fourth. The visitors grabbed a consolation late on.

Dartford’s only home defeat on this day was the first time they played on 18 November in 1899. The Darts were beaten 5-0 by Woolwich Arsenal Reserves in the Kent League. Since then, Dartford have gone ten unbeaten on their own patch with six wins and four draws.

One of those draws came in the F.A Cup first round at Watling Street in 1989. The Darts earned a replay against Football League opposition Exeter City. Andy Hessenthaler’s goal in front of over 3000 fans secured a 1-1 draw. Unfortunately, the Darts couldn’t cause an upset in the return fixture.

Worthing v Dartford

Dartford were left without a game on the weekend so next up they will travel to Worthing this Tuesday.

The Darts hope to avenge last season’s double defeat to the Rebels. With just two wins on the road Alan Dowson’s side have yet to build any momentum and sit in mid-table. Dartford’s last victory on their travels was over a month ago at Chippenham Town, they have picked up just a single point in their last three away trips.

Worthing reached the playoff semi-final last term in their first National South campaign. Once again, the Sussex club are in a strong position to challenge for promotion. The Rebels also had their fixture called off on the weekend, but have won their last two.

Last week, the Darts were unable to make it five home victories in a row. Instead, a sense of déjà vu swept over Princes Park against Chelmsford City. Squandering a one goal lead ended with the same result as last season. Not only that, for a second game running against the Clarets a former Dartford player scored. Dowson made no changes to the side that beat Weston-super-Mare 4-2 a week earlier. Alex Wall wasn’t in the matchday squad after his red card against the Seagulls. Limited options up front and no strikers on the bench proved costly.

In March, the Darts went one up at Princes Park before former players Ody Alfa and Giovanni McGregor earned Chelmsford City victory. This time it was Maxwell Statham who had the hosts ahead. The defender got on the end of Luke Coulson’s free-kick to net his second of the campaign. At the end of the first-half Joash Nembhard conceded a penalty. Up stepped Samir Carruthers to equalise against his old club. Ten minutes into the second-half the Clarets scored again through Charlie Ruff and went on to win 2-1.

All seven league games Dartford have lost this term have been by a single goal deficit. However, defeat was not helped by yet another sending off. For a third game in a row the Darts picked up a red card, their fifth of the season. This time it was Harvey Bradbury’s turn, who was involved in a scuffle and now faces suspension. With Lewis Manor already substituted and no strikers on the bench there was little alternatives in attack. Dartford did manage to rally when down to ten men and created opportunities to level. Yet it was all too frustrating for manager Alan Dowson, who picked up a caution to add to his sending off against Hemel Hempstead Town.

Inconsistent form leaves Dartford down in fifteenth but still just four points off the top seven. Worthing are just outside the playoff places in eighth on goal difference. However, the Rebels do have games in hand having played the fewest in the division.

Former players and sending offs seem to have been a theme of late. So last season’s visit to Woodside Road will sound all too familiar. The Darts had an awful afternoon down at Worthing in January. Conceding three goals, an ex-Dart scoring and Wall’s red card left Dartford with nothing to show. Two early goals from the hosts put the Darts on the back foot and they never recovered. Statham scored an own goal in eighth minute and three minutes later Ollie Pearce doubled the Rebels lead. In the second half, former Dartford loanee, Davide Rodari made it 3-0 before Wall was dismissed for an off the ball incident.

The reverse fixture at Princes Park five months earlier also ended in defeat. Worthing came from behind to win 2-1. Connor Essam headed home the opening goal after ten minutes. Early in the second-half Callum Kealy levelled things up. In the final minute of injury time Joel Colbran scored the winner for the Rebels.

Worthing had an excellent first season at this level and have continued where they left off. Adam Hinshelwood’s side won six of their opening eight league games. In their next fixture they finished the day in second. However that draw at Hemel Hempstead Town was also the start of a five match winless streak. In that time, the Sussex side suffered heavy away defeats to a strong Maidstone United and an in form Hampton and Richmond Borough. Whilst at home they were beaten by league leaders Yeovil Town. On their own patch, the loss to the Glovers was the first in two months for the Rebels.

Despite the dip in form the distraction of cup ties kept morale flowing. In September they won a pair of Sussex derbies in the F.A Cup. Eastbourne Borough were knocked out by a solitary goal then Whitehawk were beaten. The Rebels went on to win against Bath City and reach the first round for the first time since 1999. Worthing’s journey ended at Alfreton Town just over a week ago. In county competition the Rebels started their defence of the Sussex Senior Cup with a 6-2 win over Crawley Town.

In their last home game the Rebels recorded a consecutive league victory with a 3-0 triumph over Havant and Waterlooville. Kane Wills set Worthing on their way eight minutes before the break. In the second-half Ollie Pearce doubled the lead and in the final minute Danny Cashman wrapped things up. The Rebels also beat Bath City on the road 2-0 the week before the F.A Cup exit.

On This Day

Tony Sitford’s overhead kick two minutes from time earned a F.A Cup replay against Aldershot on this day in 1964. The Football League side had led since the 40th minute until the Darts levelled in front of 5700 fans. The replay saw the end of Dartford’s run when they were beaten 1-0, the attendance surpassed 9000.

Dartford claimed bragging rights in their Kent derby with Maidstone United three years ago. The Darts left it late to take victory when Tom Bonner and Charlie Sheringham scored at the Gallagher Stadium. The same Kent derby took place five years earlier, but this time at Princes Park. The National South fixture ended all square with another late Dartford goal. Alex Flisher put the Stones ahead before Elliot Bradbrook equalised.

The Darts lost their first match at Princes Park on this day in 2006. After a homecoming win three days earlier, Dartford lost 3-0 to Boreham Wood in the Isthmian League Cup.

Dartford v Chelmsford City

Dartford are back in action against Chelmsford City on Tuesday night after a weekend break.

An early F.A Cup exit left the Darts without a fixture on Saturday and time to recover. Dartford’s last game was a week ago when they picked up maximum points against Weston-super-Mare. Another win this mid-week will make it five in a row at Princes Park in all competitions. Chelmsford City return to Kent after facing Tonbridge Angels on the weekend. The Clarets are on a drawing streak which could extend to five if the spoils are shared.

In the 4-2 win over Weston-super-Mare a week ago, Alan Dowson made a couple of changes. The Darts boss opted to go with two strikers. Lewis Manor made his first start in a month to partner Harvey Bradbury up front. Maxwell Statham was also selected replacing Sam Odaudu. Brandon Barzey was named on the substitutes bench.

Mitchell Beeney played an important part in Dartford’s victory. At 1-0 down the goalkeeper saved a penalty. Luke Coulson also made important contributions by scoring from the spot and setting up the other three goals. The captain assisted Paul Rooney for the equaliser before putting the Darts in front. Alex Wall came on as a substitute and had an eventful evening. The striker netted a brace and was sent off, he will face suspension.

Victory continued Dartford’s positive run at Princes Park. If away form fails to improve then keeping their current home form will be crucial. Chelmsford City should pose a bigger challenge than their previous four visitors. The Clarets are right behind the Darts in eleventh place level on points.

Prior the triumph against Weston-super-Mare, the Darts beat bottom of the table Havant and Waterlooville. In the London Senior Cup they defeated a lower league side in Harrow Borough. Towards the end of September the Darts won a Kent derby against lowly Tonbridge Angels.

The Angels were Chelmsford City’s last opponents. Once again, Robbie Simpson’s side were unable to turn a draw into victory. The Clarets drew their seventh game of the season and fourth in a row. The Essex club found themselves a goal down in the opening ten minutes. Scott Wagstaff scored for Tonbridge Angels from close range. The hosts then had Ben Swift sent off with less than 15 minutes on the clock. Chelmsford City were level before the break when Luke Jenkins scored. However, the visitors were frustrated and couldn’t take full advantage of having an extra man.

A run of defeats and draws has seen the Clarets slip down the National South after a promising start. Their campaign opened with a seven match unbeaten run including four wins, finishing with a creditable draw at table toppers Yeovil Town. In September three consecutive losses saw Chelmsford City drop from fourth to tenth. Although the barren spell ended with a win at Weston-super-Mare, the Clarets have finished level against Slough Town, Dover Athletic, Taunton Town and now Tonbridge Angels.

Two former Dartford players turned last season’s meeting around in the last seven minutes. Samir Carruthers, who left the Darts for the Clarets in the summer, was involved in Dartford’s goal. The midfielder linked up with Jack Smith, who set up Coulson to score. Ody Alfa equalised with an unstoppable shot and in injury time Giovanni McGregor curled in the winner.

Carruthers could be one of three former players against their old club. The 30-year-old played 47 times for the Darts scoring ten goals. Jazzi Barnum-Bobb made 19 appearances and is in second spell with Chelmsford City. For Dartford, Charlie Sheringham spent a loan spell and a season with the Clarets.

It’s a good job Jason Prior doesn’t play for Chelmsford City. In Dartford’s last two games on this day, the striker has haunted the Darts.

Prior scored a Princes Park hat-trick in 2009, for the opposition. Bognor Regis Town stunned high flying Darts in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Only Wealdstone had taken points from an unbeaten Dartford side in the opening 12 matches. The Rocks were sat at the foot of the table. A late Billy Burgess equaliser saved Dartford’s blushes, but it was Prior’s trio of headers that stole the show. After going two down, Danny Harris lobbed the goalkeeper and added a second to level. Bognor Regis Town went in front again through their future Dart, but Burgess maintained the hosts unbeaten record.

Three years ago, Prior scored a brace for Dorking Wanderers as the Darts lost 3-2 at home. Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong tapped in an equaliser, then Prior was at it again. Jack Jebb levelled the score against his future employers with a brilliant free-kick. Then the visitors had time to find a winner when Matt Briggs grabbed Dorking’s third.

Dartford v Weston-super-Mare

Dartford are back at home this Halloween when they host Southern Premier League champions Weston-super-Mare.

The Darts are unbeaten on home soil against the Seagulls and aim to continue that run. A third straight victory at Princes Park will see Alan Dowson’s side enter the top ten moving within two points of the playoff places.

Weston-super-Mare made a fast start to life back in the National South. However one win in nine has seen Scott Bartlett’s team slide down the standings. The Seagulls have taken four points in their last two outings and are now a point behind the Darts.

It’s been just over five years since Dartford hosted the Seagulls. On that occasion the Darts won 2-1. Ben Greenhalgh was in this thick of the early action hitting the crossbar. The midfielder then sent in a cross for Lee Noble to header the hosts in front. Weston-super-Mare proceeded to hit the woodwork before deservedly equalising. Approaching half-time, Gethin Hill’s long range effort beat Deren Ibrahim. In the second-half the frame of the goal was struck again by the visitors. Two minutes later Elliot Bradbrook set up Jamie Philpot for the winner.

The Darts have won the last four home games against Weston-super-Mare. As hosts Dartford have won five and drawn three. The Seagulls only point at Princes Park came 12 years ago in 1-1 draw. The two previous stalemates were back in 1997 during Dartford’s homeless days.

Dowson made no changes to his starting eleven for a third game running on Saturday. The last time the Dartford boss managed that feat was in January. On a frustrating afternoon which saw Dowson sent off, the Darts fell to a 2-1 defeat at Hemel Hempstead Town.

Winger, Luke Coulson scored his first goal since the opening day from the penalty spot. Yet his first-half strike was cancelled out moments later when Reece Grant finished a one-on-one chance. The Tudors were awarded a penalty in the second-half. Joe Iaciofano stepped up and condemned the Darts to their fifth defeat in eight on the road. All seven of Dartford’s losses this season have now been by a single goal margin.

The Darts have now dropped nine points from winning positions this term. At home, six of those came in their opening three outings at Princes Park. However they have fared better on their own patch beating Havant and Waterlooville and Tonbridge Angels in consecutive games. Only Slough Town have come away from DA1 with all three points.

Bartlett couldn’t have hoped for a better start back in the division with Weston-super-Mare. A perfect record from the opening three fixtures had the Seagulls joint top. A win away at Truro City ended a run of six winless games which saw Bartlett’s side drop to mid-table.

In October, the Seagulls lost consecutive matches without scoring against Chelmsford City and Braintree Town. Although they managed to bounce back with an impressive 3-2 victory over Torquay United. On the weekend, Weston-super-Mare fell behind as early as the third minute. Maidstone United’s Levi Amantchi scored for the Stones. The points were shared after Reuben Reid netted a crucial penalty on the hour.

The Darts gave St Mary’s of Lewisham a shock by thrashing them 10-0. In more recent times, Jack Barham’s brace was enough to earn a 2-1 win over Havant and Waterlooville in 2020. Dartford are on the road again this weekend when they take on Hemel Hempstead Town in the National South.

Improved form has seen the Darts push up the table. Three league victories in their last five leaves Alan Dowson’s side three points away from the playoff places. Avoiding defeat will keep Dartford above this weekend’s opponents.

Hemel Hempstead Town are a point behind in a congested mid-table. The Tudors have a balanced home record and have drawn six of their last nine. In mid-week their unbeaten run of eight league matches came to an end.

On Tuesday, for the first time this season Dartford gained a point after falling behind. Eastbourne Borough scored early in the second-half when Fletcher Holman took advantage of a defensive error. A piece of individual skill from Brandon Barzey made sure the Darts came home with something to show. The draw at Priory Lane was Dartford’s tenth point from the last 15 available, one more than their opening nine games. Dowson made no changes to the starting eleven and no substitutions down in Sussex. After the game the Dartford boss suggested he will ‘freshen things up’ ahead of this weekend’s fixture.

Victory followed a 2-0 home win against bottom of the table Havant and Waterlooville. Joash Nembhard scored against his former team and this weekend will face another of his previous clubs. The central defender played 30 times for the Tudors during the 2021/22 season. His partner at the back Moussa Diarra also had a spell for Hemel Hempstead Town winning promotion to the National South. Over three campaigns, Diarra made 82 appearances. Strikers Alex Wall and Charlie Sheringham have hardly featured this term. The pair have also spent time at Vauxhall Road during their careers. Wall returned to the Dartford squad in mid-week after recovering from injury.

The Tudors have a couple of former Dartford players of their own. Goalkeeper, Craig King wore the number one jersey 18 times. Leaving on loan to Hemel Hempstead Town, he went on to make a permanent switch to the Hertfordshire side. Josh Hill left in the same season and played 68 games for the Darts scoring 7 goals.

The away side won both games last season with Dartford taking the honours at Vauxhall Road. Former Tudor, Samir Carruthers delicately curled the opener into the top corner from just inside the box. The 29-year-old added another scoring directly from a free-kick. The reverse fixture finished 3-1 to Hemel Hempstead Town at Princes Park. Jack Westbrook gave the away team the lead before Connor Essam’s equaliser. Approaching the interval, Kyle Ajayi scored a stunner and late in the match Jeremie Mukendi grabbed a third.

Hemel Hempstead Town won their first two this season, then lost the next two. Since then the Tudors have become draw specialists in the league. Three consecutive stalemates was followed by an away win at Chelmsford City. Bradley Quinton’s side picked up another point before an impressive home win against Torquay United. Two trips to Kent resulted in plenty of goals as they drew on both occasions. Their match at Tonbridge Angels ended 3-3, then they secured a 2-2 draw at Dover Athletic. The Tudors showed plenty of character against Dover Athletic, twice coming from behind with ten men. However, they were unable to repeat the comeback when they lost 2-0 at home to Braintree Town on Tuesday night.

Unbeaten in their last three games on 28 October, the Darts have only lost one of the last nine on this day. Up against his former team, Tom Bender was the unfortunate St Albans City defender to hand Dartford all three points in 2017. Elliot Bradbrook put Dartford in front at Princes Park. Charlie Walker equalised before Bender’s own goal.

Nine years earlier the Darts were involved in a thrilling comeback. AFC Hornchurch went 3-0 up by half-time. However goals from Cody McDonald, Rob Haworth and Jamie Day stunned the visitors in a 3-3 draw.

The last match on the road on this day was back in 2006 when Brendon Cass scored twice. The striker’s brace helped Dartford to a 3-1 win over Corinthian Casuals. Ryan Hayes scored the other goal in the Isthmian Division One South fixture.

Dartford travel to the Sussex coast and will take on Eastbourne Borough in the Natonal League on Tuesday night.

The Darts could end up in the playoff places by the end of the evening. A victory and other results going their way will be enough to enter the top seven. Improved form over the last month has led to Alan Dowson’s side winning four of their last five.

Eastbourne Borough made changes on and off the field this summer. A takeover and an injection of cash put the Sports among the favorites for promotion. However, a slow start and inconsistent results leaves Mark Beard’s side in the bottom six.

The Darts got one over their former manager on the weekend with a 2-0 win over Havant and Waterlooville. Yet it was an ex-Hawk who stole the headlines with a brace. Central defender, Joash Nembhard was at the double to continue his goalscoring form. Ever present in the National South this season, the 25-year-old has now scored three in his last two appearances. Dowson made one change to the starting lineup by replacing Jayden Boulton with Jordan Wynter. The versatile midfielder made his 150th start for the club. Dowson praised Wynter’s performance and his midfield partner Paul Rooney after the win. Delighted with recent progress, the Dartford boss was pleased with the back four after a third consecutive home clean sheet. However, Dowson urges his squad to continue their good form now there are no major fitness doubts.

Speaking to Dartford FC TV after the home victory, Dowson commented about Tuesday’s clash with Eastbourne Borough, he said: “It’ll be a tough game, they have a young side and they have got some decent players. But, if we are going to challenge and believe we will be around the playoffs and beyond, we’ve got to go on and get results. We’ve got to make this push and I believe we can do it”.

The 4-3 defeat at Hampton and Richmond Borough has been Dartford’s only blip in a month. Whilst a 4-1 triumph at Chippenham Town means the Darts have netted seven in their last two away games. At home, a pair of 1-0 wins in league and cup kickstarted the current run of form. Tonbridge Angels were beaten with a Rooney goal. Harrow Borough were knocked out of the London Senior Cup after an own goal.

The home side won 2-1 in both of these fixtures last season. Dartford travelled to Priory Lane back in April and took the lead. Harvey Bradbury made a blistering start to his Dartford career heading in his third goal in four appearances. The hosts turned the game around with goals from Leone Gravata and Luke Pearce. Substitutions and further injuries left the Darts down to nine men by the end of the match. In goal for Dartford that day was Eastbourne Borough goalkeeper Ben Dudzinski. The former Dart played 13 times for Dowson keeping five clean sheets before his switch in the summer.

Cup involvements and rearranged games has seen Eastbourne Borough’s fixture list top heavy with away games. The Sussex side will be at home for the first time in the league for over a month. In fact just one of their last six National South matches have been at Priory Lane. The last resulted in a manager returning to BN23 with Welling United. The Sports drew 2-2 with Danny Bloor’s side and took the lead from the spot through Decarrey Sheriff. The Wings scored twice to lead, but Shiloh Remy made sure the points were shared.

The Sports lost on the weekend going down to a 3-1 defeat at Weymouth. Slipping to nineteenth, Beard’s side were below par on Saturday. They fell behind when Tom Bearwish and Ezio Touray scored in the first-half for the Terras. After the break, Fletcher Holman pulled a goal back, but former Dart, Dan Roberts sealed victory for Weymouth. Beard made two changes to the side that beat St Albans City a fortnight earlier. Zak Emmerson earned a place in the starting eleven thanks to a hat-trick against the Saints. The 19-year-old came off the bench at half-time to score his first senior treble. Eastbourne Borough came from behind twice to win 3-2 at Clarence Park.

On This Day

Elliot Bradbrook scored in each of Dartford’s last three games on 24 October. The Darts have won their last four games on this day with the most recent against Bath City in 2017. Bradbrook’s first-half penalty was added to in the second-half by Duane Ofori-Acheampong in a 2-0 win.

Bradbrook also scored two years earlier when the Darts beat Bishop’s Stortford 2-1. In the opposition lineup that day was Charlie Sheringham. It was Barry Cogan who put Dartford in front before Christian Smith levelled, then Bradbrook netted the winner.

Aveley were swept aside in 2009 despite Adam Flanagan getting sent off. At 1-1, the Darts had to play the majority of the second-half with ten men. Bradbrook opened the scoring, but the Millers equalised through Ryan Edgar. After the red card, Jamie Coyle, Ryan Hayes and Jay May secured the 4-1 victory. Dartford went on to take the Isthmian Premier League title that season.

Plenty of focus will be on Dartford’s next game when they host bottom of the table Havant and Waterlooville and face a few familiar faces.

The Darts thought they had kickstarted their campaign with consecutive league victories until last weekend’s defeat. However, where goals were in short supply, they have managed to find the back of the net more regularly in their last two outings and have lost just once at home this season. Havant and Waterlooville have struggled all season and after Jamie Collins picked up just four points in the opening eight games, the Hawks decided it was time for a managerial change.

So much of the narrative will be surrounding the return of Hawks boss Steve King and the former Dartford players he has taken to Westleigh Park since being appointed. The most surprising on that list of ex-Darts is Tom Bonner who announced his retirement just four months ago despite Alan Dowson’s pleas for the defender to remain at Dartford. Ten years at Princes Park and six years as skipper, Bonner played 456 times to put him sixth in the club’s all-time appearances list. He captained the Darts to back-to-back Kent Senior Cup triumphs whilst King was at the helm. Work commitments may keep the defender out of this weekend’s match, but he has faced Dartford before whilst at Kent rivals Dover Athletic and Ebbsfleet United.

When King was appointed Dartford boss in October 2019, they were in a relegation battle. In the same season he took the Darts to a playoff final where they fell short on penalties, his fourth playoff final defeat as manager. Now at Havant and Waterlooville he will be hoping he can steer the Hawks to safety.

Since his arrival King has signed five former Darts including Bonner. Having joined on loan from Dorking Wanderers, Jack Jebb will be threat from set pieces. Adding to the midfield Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong teams up with King for a third time after arriving from Gloucester City. Goalkeeper, Reice Charles-Cook departed Bromley for the Hawks and Michael Kedman from Danish side Aalborg Boldspilklub. In the summer, former boss Jamie Collins signed ex-Dart, Kai Innocent.

Dartford have their fair share of former Havant and Waterlooville players too with Joash Nembhard, Tyrell Miller-Rodney and Paul Rooney all joining the Darts this summer. Nembhard has been ever present at the back and captained the side in the loss to St Albans last month. Miller-Rodney scored on his debut and has missed one National South fixture through suspension. Paul Rooney took some time to settle after serving a three-match ban at the start of the campaign but scored the winner against Tonbridge Angels in Dartford’s last home game in the division.

Moussa Diarra was with the Hawks during the 2020/2021 season and has formed a good partnership with Nembhard in central defence. Alex Wall is yet to make a start this term but is the current golden boot holder for the Darts and played for Havant and Waterlooville in 2020/2021. Dartford had scored on average a goal a game in the league during their opening ten fixtures. A fortnight ago the added four to their goals column and another three last time out. Yet the Darts came away with just one maximum in that time beating Chippenham Town 4-1 on the road. The rescheduled trip to Hampton and Richmond Borough last weekend finished a run of three straight wins in all competitions leaving Dartford down in fourteenth place.

A comeback, two penalties, seven goals and a last-minute winner provided plenty of entertainment, but Dartford came away with nothing from the Beveree. Dowson made three changes to the side that beat Chippenham Town due to the injuries to loanee Joshua Johnson and Jordan Wynter and the suspension of Maxwell Statham. In came academy graduate Jayden Boulton for his first ever league start, the experienced Paul Rooney and Tyrell Miller-Rodney returned from his one game ban.

Despite dominating possession in the first-half, the Darts found themselves two goals down before half-time. Hampton and Richmond Borough went in front through Dean Inman and increased their lead when Isaac Pitblado beat Mitch Beeney at the near post. During the interval Boulton and Rooney were replaced by Archie Woods and Lewis Manor.

Two quickfire goals had the Darts level, first Harvey Bradbury scored Dartford’s opener for a second game running, then Joash Nembhard headed his first for the club. The Beavers went back ahead after Ben Seymour dispatched his penalty, but once again Dartford found a leveller when Manor outrageously flicked the ball home.

Bradbury had no problems from twelve yards a week earlier by scoring two penalties against Chippenham Town. The striker had the chance to score another from the spot, but his effort went straight down the middle giving Beavers goalkeeper, Adam Desbois an easy save to make. That miss proved costly because in stoppage time Jake Gray scored a dramatic late winner for Hampton and Richmond Borough.

Less than a year ago, Dartford and Havant and Waterlooville were challenging Ebbsfleet United for a potential title race. The Hawks saw former boss, Paul Doswell step down before the season was out and a slide down the table and out of the playoff places. The trend has continued this term with Collins departing leaving the Hampshire side at the foot of the standings. Since taking charge King has had little time to gel his squad and from his opening two league games the Hawks have taken a point.

The goalless draw at Taunton Town was a solid enough start for a side that had lost three in a row. Despite the fact there were no goals in this game there were plenty of chances including a missed penalty by Taunton Town’s Nick McCootie. With the game heading for full-time, the Hawks had Ansu Janneh sent off after he picked up a second caution.

Like Dartford, Havant and Waterlooville’s last game was also against Hampton and Richmond Borough and finished in a late defeat. King’s side gave away a lead to lose 2-1 at Westleigh Park. James Roberts netted the opener from a spot-kick. Ruaridh Donaldson put Hampton and Richmond Borough back on level terms before Kurran-Browne’s winner ten minutes from time.

Last season’s fixture at Princes Park over a year ago ended in defeat for Dartford and it was a former Dart, Jason Prior who got his inevitable goal before Davide Rodari equalised. At the time the Darts succumbed to their first defeat of the campaign when Oscar Gobern netted the winner.

Dowson’s side avenged that loss in the reverse game at Westleigh Park, which came at the beginning of a fruitful festive period for the Darts. A top of the table clash saw Wall return to haunt his former club with a brace either side of Josh Passley’s unfortunate own goal. Jake McCarthy halved the deficit for the Hawks, but Wall’s second put the result beyond doubt in a 3-1 win for the Darts. Dowson’s side then went on to beat rivals Ebbsfleet United over Christmas and New Year to temporarily enter the title race.

Dartford’s only victory in their last five on this day was at home against Burgess Hill Town in 2003. The Darts beat the Sussex side 2-1 in the Southern League Division One East. Six years ago, Chelmsford City won by a solitary Michael West goal. The Clarets then had Kudus Oyenuga red carded after just 19 minutes, but the Darts couldn’t break down the ten men. Prior the run of one win in five, Dartford had won nine and drawn one of the previous ten on 21 October. In 1961 they qualified for the F.A Cup first round with a 4-1 victory over Hastings United. Nine years later the Darts won the first leg of the Kent Senior Shield final 2-1 against Bexley United. Dartford drew the second leg 2-2 to triumph in the county competition.
