Taunton Town

History was made in the final day when Jay Foulston’s late winner against Farnborough clinched the Southern Premier South title. For the first time, Taunton Town will play in the National South. Over the last eight years, three consecutive playoff setbacks in the Southern League Division One West have been followed by two promotions in three full campaigns. Last season it took a while for the Peacocks to find their rhythm. A phenomenal run in 2022 was the decisive factor in the end, Taunton Town went on to win 19 of their last 22 games to lift the Southern Premier League trophy.

Manager – Rob Dray

In full completed seasons since joining Taunton Town as a coach, Dray has never finished outside the top four. He became part of the backroom team in the summer of 2016 and two years later was lifting the Southern Division One West title. Shortly after that triumph Dray was promoted to interim manager before being appointed Head of Football, guiding the Peacocks to second in their first ever campaign in the Southern Premier League. Last term he went one better securing promotion to the National South by winning the Southern Premier League South division, an impressive start to his management career.

St Albans City

Based on one defeat in the fifteen in 2020/2021, St Albans City were talked about as a title challenger. The Saints had the chance to prove themselves in the opening two fixtures against other favourites Dartford then Dorking Wanderers, they lost both. The Hertfordshire club rallied together though putting seven wins and a draw on the board. Inconsistency followed as St Albans City dropped points at home against lower league sides and struggled on the road when up against those above them. Always within a chance to make the playoffs their season tailed off from March onwards falling short of the top seven.

Manager – Ian Allinson

Arguably the most experienced manager in the division, Allinson made over 300 appearances for Colchester United as a player and spent four years in the eighties with Arsenal playing over a century of games for the Gunners. Allinson started managing in the lower echelons of non-league with spells at Baldock Town, Stotfold, Corby Town, Barton Rovers and Harlow Town. His last two jobs have spanned 14 years, first at Boreham Wood, who he led from the Isthmian Premier League to the National League via two playoff campaigns and now with St Albans City, where he has regularly posted top ten finishes for the Hertfordshire club.

Slough Town

Only their second full season in the National South since winning promotion four years ago. The Rebels impressed in their first campaign missing out on the top ten. That was followed by a playoff campaign ended by Dartford. Last term Slough Town took a while to get going, after an opening day win, they went seven without victory. A spell of four wins in five in October and November was as good as it got, but they never looked trouble. Although Slough Town took a few hammerings they completed a double over champions Maidstone United and had a decent enough home record.

Manager – Neil Baker and Jon Underwood

The only joint management team in the National South proves it can be done, especially as this duo are entering their tenth year together at Slough Town. Baker joined Underwood in May 2013 after the pair had already worked together at Godalming Town in the Southern League Division One Central. When they managing solo Baker was in charge at Fleet Spurs and Underwood was the boss at Sandhurst Town. Since being appointed they have taken Slough Town up two divisions twice through the playoffs, twice reached the second round of the F.A Cup and once participated in the National South playoffs.

Oxford City

Consistency home and away led to a solid season for the Hoops and they deservedly reached the playoffs. Oxford City lost just one game in their opening sixteen and that was against the eventual champions. Only one side outside of the top seven beat the Hoops and that was relegated Billericay Town. Former manager, David Oldfield decided to test himself in the league above leaving for Weymouth in January. However, the Hoops maintained their top seven place for their best finish since promotion to step two. In the playoff eliminator they beat Eastbourne Borough before losing the semi-final against promoted Dorking Wanderers.

Manager – Ross Jenkins

New to the managing scene, Jenkins impressed the board during his caretaker spell and earned a role as permanent boss. Taking over in January 2022 with Oxford City sitting in fourth place, Jenkins maintained a level of performance to secure a playoff place and with that he was appointed Head Coach in March. Persistent injury meant as a player he retired at 28-years-old, however that allowed him to move into coaching with Oxford City. Before his retirement, Jenkins started at Watford, moved to Crawley Town and ended up in Scotland with Hamilton Academical via spells in Romania, Bulgaria and Norway.

Hungerford Town

Up until Easter things were going well for Hungerford Town as they tried to repeat reaching a playoff place like they did in 2016/2017, unfortunately they were unable to compete in them that season. The Crusaders were always on the fringes without really breaking into the top seven after the New Year. A purple patch in October had the Berkshire side competing for a higher finish than they achieved. After the Easter period they picked up one point on the final day from their final seven games and lost ten of their last thirteen outings. However, they did record their best finish for five years.

Manager – Danny Robinson

The F.A Vase winning boss joined Hungerford Town after five successful years at Thatcham Town. He led the Kingfishers to Wembley in 2018 and in the same season won the Hellenic League. After a solid campaign in the Southern Division One South, the following year saw Thatcham Town lead the table before non-league’s premature end that year. In May 2020, Robinson was given the Hungerford Town job after the club had twice survived relegation on the final day and then remained in the National South after the incomplete campaign. Robinson eased the Crusaders to mid-table last term continuing his success as a manager.

Hemel Hempstead Town

Fearing a relegation battle after just five games, the Tudors were pointless in that spell and at rock bottom. Then Hemel Hempstead Town joined the party losing just once in the next eight to steady the ship. They proceeded with patchy form throughout the campaign and in the end, safety was easily achieved. In fact, heading down the final straight the Hertfordshire side were within two points of the playoffs, but one point from their last five outings bookended their season the way it began. They will need to tighten up next term, only Welling United conceded more goals.

Manager – Mark Jones

About to start his first full season with the club, Jones was appointed the Tudors boss just under a year ago. He had previously managed Oxford City in the National South and in his three-year spell led them to mid-table finishes and the F.A Cup first round. Before making the leap into first team management, Jones worked with the academies at Stevenage and Watford and earned a UEFA ‘A’ license coaching badge. As a player the Hemel Hempstead Town boss represented Oxford City, Aylesbury United, Harrow Borough and Thame United after starting out at Watford as an apprentice in the mid-nineties.

Havant and Waterlooville

Pipped to the final playoff place on the last day of the season, Havant and Waterlooville will rue their slow start to the campaign. The Hawks were beaten in half of their opening eight matches, pulled together then were demolished 8-0 on Boxing Day against Dorking Wanderers, which sparked a nine-match winless run. A fine victory over Ebbsfleet United reignited the side as they finished strongly losing just twice in their final fifteen outings, unfortunately one of those defeats was the crucial final day loss against Chippenham Town, who leapfrogged their opponents to claim that last playoff spot.

Manager – Paul Doswell

Winner of four promotions in his managerial career, Doswell has yet to replicate that success with Havant and Waterlooville after one full campaign. His appointment in April 2019 had the Hawks amongst the favourites to return to the top flight of non-league. Havant and Waterlooville finished runners up losing to Dartford in the playoffs and last season they narrowly missed out on the top seven. He took Eastleigh from the Wessex League to the National South and Sutton United from the Isthmian Premier to the National League. He also guided the U’s to the F.A Cup fifth round where they lost to Arsenal.

Hampton and Richmond Borough

It’s not often you win 5-0 in the first game of the season and that is what Hampton and Richmond Borough did. Aside from another impressive performance at home to Ebbsfleet United, the Beavers never really got into the groove. By the end of November, the Middlesex club had only lost three league games. Then the wheels came off in the Winter months as they went on to pick up just eight points from December to the end of February. The Beavers returned to that inconsistent form showed at the beginning of the campaign and with those results ended mid-table.

Manager – Gary McCann

Successor to the future Dartford manager in June 2018, McCann had big shoes to fill, and he has done a decent job. He has achieved more F.A Cup first round appearances than any ever Hampton and Richmond Borough boss has managed. McCann has always had the Beavers in and around the playoff places, making the end of season competition in back-to-back campaigns before being denied a place on points per game. Previously McCann had spent 13 years at Hendon, first as a player then as a manager and in his final year guided the Greens to the Isthmian Premier League promotion final.
